Fear of the dentist is one of the most common fears that people have. Sometimes people have very painful memories of dental care, and even the thought of sitting down in a dental chair makes them break out in a cold sweat.
Here at Hylan Dental Care, we understand fear of the dentist and want to do everything we can to help you through this.
Options for Dealing with Fear of the Dentist
Different techniques work for different people.
For some people, they just need the dentist to have a gentle technique. And that is exactly what we do.
Did you know that there is a new 33-gauge needle that is so tiny you can hardly feel it? It used to be that making an injection needle that tiny would mean that it would break during use. But new metal alloys make them safe, and so this is what we use.
There is also a new local anesthetic that can be wiped on the tissue in the mouth and make it so numb that you don't even feel the injection.
For some people, distraction is a great technique for dealing with fear of the dentist. So we have televisions in our treatment rooms so you can watch TV during your appointment and forget what we are doing. This works great for children. They just watch their TV show while we are fixing their teeth.

Nitrous Oxide
Many people find that nitrous oxide, otherwise known as happy gas or laughing gas, makes everything in the dental appointment go better. For those who have had a hard time getting numb, it strengthens the novocain and makes it so you don't feel anything. You are calm and relaxed, and the appointment seems to just go by much faster.
And what's nice about nitrous oxide is that it wears off immediately. You breathe pure oxygen for a couple of minutes at the end of the appointment, and you are back to normal so that you can drive home and go back to work or whatever else you were doing.
Sedation Dentistry
If you want, we can also use sedation dentistry. Read more about it by clicking the link. You take a small pill at the beginning of your appointment, and in many cases you will not even remember your appointment. This has helped many patients completely overcome their fear of the dentist. If you would like sedation dentistry, just ask.
